Neck Pain Q & A

What causes neck pain?

Neck pain is caused by a number of conditions and affects almost every adult at some point during their lives. As the use of smartphones and tablets increase, neck pain is becoming more endemic due to the extra pressure exerted on the delicate vertebrae by the constant downward tilt of the head. Some of the other causes of neck pain include:

  • Trauma
  • Misalignment (subluxation) of the spine
  • Poor posture
  • Osteoarthritis
  • Head forward syndrome
  • Muscle sprain/strain
  • Degenerative disc disease

How is neck pain diagnosed?

Neck pain is diagnosed with an examination, which includes a manual exam, a range of motion test, orthopedic tests, muscle tests, and a neurological test. The chiropractor will also touch and massage the affected area to feel for any abnormalities. The chiropractor will order diagnostic imaging tests such as X-rays, MRIs, and CT scans if necessary to gather further information about the neck injury.

How do the chiropractors treat neck pain?

Based on the findings of the examination, postural analysis, and/or X-rays, the chiropractor will create a customized treatment plan to remove the pressure from the nervous system, which will relieve pain, correct posture, and strengthen the muscles. Treatment may include adjustments, massage or other methodologies, depending on the unique needs of the patient.
